By: CYNTHIA RAMSAY

“The politically correct formula for peace in the Middle East is Israel giving up occupied territory in return for peace with the Arab world. But that plan is ignoring the elephant in the Mideast living room – antisemitism is making a big comeback in the region. Jews are now responsible for every calamity, from disease in Pakistan to putting a spell on [Osama] bin Laden so that he’ll attack America.”

So begins the first episode of veteran journalist Martin Himel’s four-part documentary series Jew Bashing: The New Anti-Semitism, which aired May 6 on VisionTV. Himel’s introduction offers only a hint of what’s to come. For anyone who doubts that antisemitism is a serious problem, Himel takes viewers to the Middle East (Pakistan, Egypt, Iran and the Gaza Strip), Europe (France, Sweden and the United Kingdom), the United States and Canada. He not only interviews proud and open antisemites and racists, but his film team also capture with hidden cameras what has gone on in, for example, Amnesty International offices and during the Occupy AIPAC conference. Not one prone to panic or assume the worst, it was intense to watch such hatred and ignorance, and to see just how much of both exists.

Himel’s biography is extensive and impressive. As a foreign correspondent for more than 20 years and as a documentary filmmaker, he has reported from around the world, his work appearing on international news outlets too numerous to name. His film company Elsash Productions Ltd.’s credits include the documentaries Persecuted Christians, North Korea: Desperate or Deceptive,Angels with Broken Wings and Jenin: Massacring Truth, and television series Infidelity, Twist of Faith and Foreign Correspondent. On the usually taboo subjects of politics and religion, Himel is obviously not shy.

“Faith is a universal motif in our world,” Himel told the Independent about what draws him to such topics. “Wherever you go on the globe, people believe in something, someone, some concept. Faith drives politics, arts, even love relationships. I have explored the impact of faith on the sick in America, the oppressed Muslims in China, the spirit women in Thailand trying to defend their hill tribe. In our series on infidelity, we have explored the interplay of theological belief and infidelity – where do morals conflict with the dilemmas of love and loyalty.

“Certainly, belief also plays a role in the new antisemitism,” he continued. “Antisemites may not be active believers and may not necessarily look at God as the ultimate arbiter anymore, but the legacy of thousands of years of antisemitism fueled by theology leaves an impact to this day.”

What’s perhaps unique about the Jew Bashing series is that it goes beyond exposing the words of antisemitism, and shows in stark images antisemitic views being acted upon – in angry protest, in violence, in harassment – and its effects: fear, high security, etc.

“I have seen many documentaries on antisemitism,” explained Himel about how the idea for Jew Bashing came about. “Most are boring, highbrow, and show no antisemitism. They have analysis and victims of antisemitism.
“This spawned my idea of documenting and capturing antisemitism, showing it on camera, and let the hatred permeate. This project took two years. So far, we have versioned a four-part series for Canada. We have also created a one-hour version that has now broadcast in Israel on the main Channel 2 network.”

In Jew Bashing, some people interviewed are unabashedly antisemitic and racist, while others express their views openly only behind closed doors, in a meeting of like-minded people, for example. A faint-hearted reporter might be concerned about the reaction to the documentary by those whose hateful views were filmed covertly.

“I am not worried,” said Himel. “I have accurately portrayed these people. Their comments simply speak for themselves. They have not been taken out of context. We made sure of this.”

It is interesting in this respect, given the changes in technology, that anyone would think that something they say behind closed doors will not be broadcast to a wider audience. It is also interesting to see how so many people become righteously indignant and dismissive when asked politely to explain their views. Himel and his crew receive a violent reception more than once when filming a rally, and rocks are thrown at the car, breaking their back window and almost injuring one of the crew, when they try to enter a neighborhood that has been having problems with antisemitism.

“I worked for over 20 years as a foreign news television correspondent for CTV, Global and Fox television in the U.S.A. I have covered wars in the Mideast, the Balkans revolution, and upheaval in Romania and in South Africa, and managed to get into North Korea to do a documentary,” offered Himel when asked how investigative journalism has changed over the course of his career. “In the 1980s, before the Internet and before technical capabilities enhanced missiles and roadside bombs, conflicts were violent but more manageable to cover. Today, weapons are far more deadly and, with the Internet, combatants can know much more about a journalist than before. That can make him/her into a vulnerable target. On the other hand, with smartphones, there are tens of thousands of camerapeople in every conflict. Take the Syrian civil war – the most astounding visuals come from the people who live in the cities and simply point their smartphones at the turmoil and upload the videos online. This has changed everything with coverage. Nothing can be hidden anymore from public scrutiny.”

In Jew Bashing, Alan Dershowitz mentions fighting bad ideas with good ideas, but otherwise the series is mainly descriptive of the enormity of the problem rather than prescriptive regarding potential solutions.

“You have to manage antisemitism,” Himel told the Independent. “It cannot be eradicated. It is totally illogical. The best way to manage antisemitism is to expose it, and for people not to stand silent when they experience antisemitism. The concept of ‘don’t make waves,’ ‘this nonsense will pass,’ ‘these are only marginal idiots,’ has proven wrong. That is what they said about a funny little man with a moustache who mounted the failed Munich Putsch in the 1920s and was sent to jail. He ran an oddball group called the Nazis in cultured Germany. If you still don’t get it – that was Adolph Hitler.”

The second episode of Jew Bashing – dealing with antisemitism in Europe – aired May 13. Still to come are the episodes on the United States (May 20), in which Himel interviews some ardent antisemitic and racist webmasters, all of whom, perhaps coincidentally, live in small, predominantly white American towns; and on Canada (May 27), where Himel travels across the country, interviewing both antisemites and those who are trying to counter such views within the United Church, on the Internet and in Montreal and Vancouver, where antisemitism and anti-Zionism mix in attempts to shut down via protest retail stores that sell Israeli products.

Jew Bashing is part of a VisionTV focus on exposing extremism, which also includes other programming, including Persecuted Christians, The War on Faith: Religious Persecution Around the World, Facing Extremism and Jews and Money: Investigation of a Myth</en>.
May 6, 2013 - The Times of Israel

By Atara Beck

‘Jew Bashing,’ a disturbing documentary by veteran journalist Martin Himel, exposes global virulent Internet anti-Semitism and its influential proponents

Even for those acutely aware of the rise of anti-Semitism worldwide, viewing “Jew Bashing: The New Anti-Semitism,” a new, investigative documentary, is a profoundly disturbing experience. It is also a must-see.

The impressive feature, written and produced by award-winning Canadian-Israeli filmmaker and former war correspondent Martin Himel, is divided into four segments: the Middle East, Europe, the US and Canada. Each is approximately 45 minutes long, and the viewer remains spellbound throughout. Canadian media visionary Moses Znaimer is the executive producer and a different section of the series will be screened on Canada’s VisionTV on Monday evenings throughout the month of May.

Himel, often undercover, interviews a wide range of scholars, politicians, thinkers, activists, hatemongers and diverse religious leaders. He touches upon every aspect of this alarming revival of the world’s oldest hatred, albeit largely in the guise of anti-Zionism.

Others have already written or lectured on modern-day anti-Semitism, Himel acknowledged in an interview with The Times of Israel. “But what’s different about this documentary is that it lets you see it. You have to meet them [anti-Semites]; you have to be an investigative reporter. My goal was to show it on camera. You can feel the hatred and it speaks for itself. When you capture it on camera, you let the viewer really feel it, and it’s uncomfortable to watch.”

Although anti-Semitism in the West often masquerades as anti-Zionism, Himel provides shocking interviews with open Jew-haters who call for extermination of the Jewish race. He points out that promoting hate literature is legal in the US – unlike in Canada and other Western countries – and is readily accessible worldwide on the Internet, which is a “heaven for hard-core anti-Semitism” and has “led to bloodshed.”

Many would deny that anti-Semitism threatens the civilized world. For them, as well as for peace-loving Israelis who cannot fathom the intense hatred for Jews that exists in much of the Arab world, this documentary is an important eye opener.

As part of the programming for last month’s Holocaust Remembrance Day in Israel, a version of the documentary, focusing on the blossoming of anti-Semitism on the Internet, was shown on Channel 2. Many Israelis have difficulty accepting the existence of this phenomenon, Himel said in the interview.

“They don’t know what anti-Semitism is,” having been relatively sheltered from it. Regarding terror and intifadas, “it’s not the same thing… They see it in terms of a land-to-land issue.

“There’s a big undercurrent of anti-Semitism in Europe. Israelis aren’t aware of it because they haven’t experienced it.”

owever, there’s also “a lot of anti-Semitism in Gaza. Hamas says the Holocaust is a Jewish plot… It’s hard for Israelis to swallow it.”

According to Himel, many North American Jews are similarly unable to grasp the situation, having grown up in a golden era.

He opens his segment on the Middle East by saying: “The politically correct formula for peace in the Middle East is Israel giving up occupied territory in return for peace with the Arab world. But that plan is ignoring the elephant in the Mideast room: Anti-Semitism is making a big comeback in the region. Jews are now responsible for every calamity, from disease in Pakistan to putting a spell on Bin Laden so that he’ll attack America.”

In Lahore, Pakistan, “most here never met a Jew, but many believe the Jews are the greatest evil on earth.”

This ignorance is not unique to Pakistan and the Middle East. One scene at an anti-Israel demonstration in the US would be humorous if not for the danger.

A 20-something Jewish demonstrator explains his activism against the Jewish state, saying: “I forget the theology. But, you know, they tend to do pogroms. Jews don’t proselytize, [and] then they want to take over the world by control. It’s kind of an inherently racist religion. I always felt this as a kid. You know, it’s right there in the book [Torah]. I never studied it. It’s inherently tribalistic. It’s inherently racist.”

The Canadian segment explores, among other issues, rising anti-Semitism in the Church, where promoters of an economic boycott of Israel refuse to discuss why they limit their activism to Israel while ignoring massive human-rights abuses in several Muslim countries, including violent persecution of Christian communities. According to Canadian Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Jason Kenney, “there’s something really perverse about this.”

“Anti-Semitism will never disappear, Himel told the Times of Israel. “But I think that as long as people talk about it and say it exists and condemn it, the situation could be contained significantly by bringing awareness and by showing that this is ugly and hateful, and that it’s not acceptable.”

It is indeed worrisome to see the similarities between increasing anti-Jewish tactics today and those applied in the years leading up to the Holocaust, including attempts to ruin Jewish businesses and blaming the Jews for all of society’s ills. If this sounds like an exaggeration, watch the documentary and think about the motto, “Never Again.”

The series is being aired in Canada during the month of May on VisionTV on Monday evenings, 9 pm ET/6 pm PT. It can be seen on Rogers 60 + 237, Bell 261, Shaw Direct 394. For more information, go to www.visiontv.ca. It will be shown in the US at a future date as yet undetermined.

Albert Miller, 85, met his wife Edna, 93, on the dance floor 60 years ago and they reconvene every chance they get, the couple said while dancing to the tunes of a Beatles tribute act at the Ottawa ZoomerShow.

OTTAWA — As a Beatles tribute band played on the stage of Ottawa’s first ZoomerShow, Albert Miller asked his wife to dance just as he did 60 years ago when they were first married.
“Until we drop dead, we’ll be dancing,” 85-year-old Miller said with a chuckle.
“We met on the dance floor,” Edna, Miller’s 93-year-old wife, chimed in.
On Saturday at the Ernst and Young Centre during Canada’s largest consumer and lifestyle expo for people 45 and up, the couple was the centre of attention as they danced up a storm.
“She’s only 93 and I’m only 42,” Miller joked.
They were young at heart and the perfect example of what the show’s producer, David Sersta, called zoomers — baby boomers with “zip.”
Virginia Curtis and Clarice Steers, two women who joked they were at the tail end of the zoomer generation, weren’t dancing but showed people how to perform Taoist Tai Chi.
They did slow, coordinated movements that are intended to calm the mind, improve balance, flexibility and coordination. In a beginner Tai Chi class, students learn the basics about balance.
“It is relaxing. It also works every muscle in your body, all of your ligaments, your tendons, but probably the most significant thing is balance,” Curtis said.
For Steers, Tai Chi has become part of her life. In fact, she organizes her holidays around vacation spots where she can do Tai Chi.
“When you go to these other locations, even though you don’t have language, you have the common language of Tai Chi,” Steers said.

Near the “Active zone” where Tai Chi was performed, representatives from the largest “play group” for women in the world were showing off their beautiful hats.
The Red Hat Society, a group of women who step away from their busy lives to play, was created in 1997 and has grown into a popular girl’s night out event.
Brightly-coloured red hats, purple clothing and costume jewelry — a must for ladies in red — drew women to find out what the fad was all about. on Saturday.
Women under the age of 50 can be part of the society, but they must wear pink hats.
For zoomers looking for excitement, a white river rafting booth was set up at the expo on Saturday.
Some hesitantly gazed at the large yellow boat used for white river rafting before moving on to another exhibit.
Peter Smith with River Run Rafting said a 70-year-old man who recently experienced the thrill of skydiving visited his exhibit on Saturday wanting to try white river rafting next.
“They’ve reached that point in their lives where they’re looking for something to do and excitement,” Smith said.
For those who would prefer an exotic trip and raft on the White Nile rapids in Uganda, the travel booth at the show was the place to visit.
Pamphlets showcased on a shelf below a small Eiffel Tower figurine boasted trips to Paris, Alpine adventures, cruises and even African safaris.
One travel company said in a pamphlet they could arrange for worldly zoomers to look into the eyes of a mountain gorilla or hear the call of an hyena in the dark of night.
Sheila Gallant-Halloran, a travel adviser for Vision 2000, said different is what zoomers are looking for.
“They’re at the point in their life now that they’re looking for an experience and they want something that is going to be memorable,” she said. “They’ve done the run of the mill stuff.”
The expo continues on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

May 4, 2013 - The Catholic Register

Written by Michael Swan, The Catholic Register

TORONTO – Religious persecution, whether by mob violence, popular prejudice or state-imposed restrictions on religious practice, is significant in 163 countries, according to the Pew Research Centre’s Forum on Religion and Public Life, with Christianity being the number one target. The world’s 2.2 billion Christians face significant state or popular persecution in 130 countries, says the Pew Forum, while Aid to the Church in Need estimates 150,000 Christians are killed annually because of their faith.
At the same time violence against Jews, who represent less than one per cent of the world’s population, is on the rise. Muslims in China, Russia and in many majority Muslim countries face either constant state harassment or inter-communal violence.
Not much of this makes the news. Vision TV is trying to cut a hole in the wall of silence with a series of Monday night broadcasts throughout May and June. The broadcaster is calling the series The War On Faith, Religious Persecution Around the World. Toronto’s Cardinal Thomas Collins, former newspaper baron Conrad Black, documentary filmmaker Martin Himel, Toronto Rabbi Yossi Saperman, Imam Shabir Ally and Hindu Pandit Roopnauth Sharma gathered at Vision’s studios April 26 for an hour-long panel discussion about why religious persecution is on the rise and why it gets so little attention.
The discussion will be broadcast on Vision May 13 at 10 p.m. Eastern and 7 p.m. Pacific.
“It staggers me it’s not getting more attention,” panel host Libby Znaimer told The Catholic Register.
Black called media indifference to religious conflict and persecution shameful.
“What does this say about our great Western free press?” he asked.
The problem is that newsrooms at major media outlets are controlled by people who “are not religiously minded,” Black said. “They don’t notice.”
Collins called the absence of media awareness “absolutely shocking.” “It has got to change,” said the cardinal.
Christians in the West have been put in a delicate position by the violent disintegration of societies in the Middle East, said Collins. As Christians have found themselves suddenly unwelcome in Iraq, Egypt and now Syria, parishes and dioceses have been moved to rescue refugees who simply cannot return home. “We would rather they not be refugees,” Collins said.
The problem with bringing Christian refugees from the Middle East to Canada is that it aids the extremist militias whose aim is to rid the region of all Christians.
“If we are completely successful and bring them all to Canada, well there goes Christianity in the Middle East,” Collins said.
Violent fundamentalism puts ordinary Muslims in a bind, said Ally. If Muslims turn on the fundamentalists, in effect ex-communicating them, they only create another division among Muslims. In Islam, the unity of all Muslims is one of the highest ideals. The solution has to be greater religious literacy and more serious reading of the Quran, he said.
“Human intellect has to apply Scripture to our circumstances,” he said. Reading the Quran in its historical context should become a minimum standard, not just for Imams but for all Muslims, said Ally.
Beyond ignorance and uneducated preaching, politics gets involved, said Saperman. Politicians fill power vacuums by exploiting the ignorance and fear of large numbers of oppressed people. “It is evident that religion and politics are deeply intertwined,” he said. People know they are oppressed, but don’t necessarily know the source of their oppression. That’s when fantastical conspiracy theories about Jews controlling the media, the United Nations, the United States, etc. are trotted out.
“Anti-Semitism is not new, but sadly it never gets old,” said Saperman.

May 1, 2013 - Canadian Catholic News

Written by Deborah Gyapong, Canadian Catholic News

GATINEAU, Que. – Toronto’s Cardinal Thomas Collins has urged the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission to not to let the faith community get “rolled over.”
Collins was before the CRTC May 1 as an intervenor on behalf of Vision TV, which is fighting to maintain its place on basic cable in Canada.
“As a community we contribute to the whole country,” said Collins, noting he was speaking not just of the Catholic Church but other faith communities as well. “Having one channel on basic coverage is a way of recognizing that.
“It would be very easy for faith communities to be rolled over,” he said.
The cardinal said he hoped the government, in representing the whole of Canadian society, “would assure a place for people of faith.”
While CRTC Chairman Jean Pierre Blais told Collins the cable and satellite companies have said they would be unlikely to remove Vision from their basic package even if the mandatory designation were removed, Collins sought official assurance this would be the case.
“I don’t take a great deal of comfort in the assurances of those great corporations,” Collins said. “This is a national thing, something to do with Canada. I don’t want to rely on the favour of these immense companies.”
He pointed out that some of the cable operators own sports franchises and he fears they would get priority.
The archbishop of Toronto noted Vision TV, since its 1987 founding, has celebrated Canada’s great religious diversity.
“On any given day, you will find Christian programming alongside Hindu, Jewish, Muslim and Sikh shows, a reflection of the diversity of the faith communities present in our country.”
The cardinal stressed the importance of the Daily Mass Vision broadcasts six days a week for the ill, the aged and the disabled Catholics who cannot attend regular Church services. He pointed out many of Vision’s viewers who are 50 years old or older cannot afford to pay for package of specialty channels or the equipment needed for digital stations.
Blais asked whether the Catholic Church had considered offering a closed circuit option for people to watch Mass. Collins said this has been done in hospitals and other institutions, but the need for the daily Mass is found coast to coast.
One Free World International founder Rev. Majed El Shafie told the CRTC Vision was “an important part of my healing as a human being” as a refugee from religious persecution in Egypt, where he was tortured for converting from Islam to the Christian faith.
“Imagine if this channel existed in Pakistan or Afghanistan,” said El Shafie, whose ministry promotes religious freedom around the world and rescues people from persecution.
If Vision is taken off basic cable and people can’t find it or it becomes too expensive, the network will be “starved to death” and the religious community and minority communities “will be hurt,” he said.
How the CRTC handles Vision “will be a defining moment for setting the tone of public discourse,” he said. “It will have a profound impact on how we value our most fundamental rights and freedoms.”
Lorna Dueck, columnist, broadcaster and host of Context with Lorna Dueck, said “the mainstream media has too little openness” and religious communities have so little “access to free expression” in Canada.
“In my experience, Canadians want to see this unique offering” that looks at the faith dimension behind the headlines. The basic cable made it possible “to stumble across us through the power of their remote control,” she said.
There has been no announcement as to when a decision will come down.

THE NEW ANTI-SEMITISM

4-part undercover investigative documentary series airs Mondays on VisionTV starting May 6, 2013 at 9pm ET

While communities around the world commemorate Holocaust Remembrance Week, VisionTV announces the broadcast of a groundbreaking and provocative original documentary series that shows a new wave of anti-Semitic hatred is gathering pace. According to a study just released from Tel Aviv University there is a 30% increase in anti-Semitic activity worldwide, especially in Europe.

Starting Monday, May 6 at 9pm ET, VisionTV will present the world premiere of JEW BASHING: THE NEW ANTI-SEMITISM, a 4-part series from award-winning filmmaker and veteran war correspondent Martin Himel, executive produced by Moses Znaimer.

While other filmmakers have documented the growing fear among Jewish communities globally, JEW BASHING is different. Martin Himel and his team go undercover to get influential politicians, clerics, journalists, and academics to talk about their hatred of Jews.

Himel investigates and penetrates Anti-Zionist movements, white supremacist groups, and militant Islamic movements, exposing and capturing on camera anti-Semitism as viewers have never seen it before.

PART 1: New Anti-Semitism Middle East
This episode explores anti-Semitism in Pakistan, Egypt, Iran, and the Hamas dominated Gaza Strip where Himel’s team secure exclusive interviews with top journalists, clerics, politicians and opinion-makers who freely express their hatred for Jews. Anti-Semitism permeates popular culture in these countries. Holocaust “cartoons” animate the Iranian TV screen, football fans call for a “New Holocaust” at Egyptian matches, Pakistani and Gazan children are taught that the Holocaust and 9/11 were engineered by Jews to destroy Muslims, and that The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, the most notorious political forgery of modern times, is a blueprint of Truth, revealing the innate deviousness and danger of The Jew as the ultimate Enemy.

PART 2: New Anti-Semitism Europe
How does it feel to live with anti-Semitism daily? Himel’s cameras reveal anti-Semitic hatred is growing across Europe less than a century after the Holocaust. Expressing anti-Semitism is illegal under EU law but in France, Sweden, and the UK, well-known public figures compare Jews and Zionists to Nazis and warn of Jewish lobbies dominating Europe and America. Here, hate has gone beyond rhetoric. Synagogues are repeatedly vandalized and practicing Jews must be protected to observe their faith. Jewish cultural centres are heavily guarded fortresses of concrete and steel to prevent suicide bombers and other acts of violence instigated largely by a new wave of disgruntled immigrants from North Africa, the Middle East, and Kosovo. Himel’s team even became a target.

PART 3: New Anti-Semitism USA
In the land of free speech and wide access to the internet, Himel captures anti-Semitic Americans – both left and right wing – describing Jews as a tribal racist group who control Capitol Hill, Wall Street and Hollywood, start wars and create banking crises. This episode also features Himel traveling to backwater Middle American towns to conduct exclusive and shocking interviews with the country’s top anti-Semitic webmasters who can spout and spread their rumours and lies to willing millions worldwide with the instant click of a button. Until now, the internet has allowed them to hide quietly behind anonymity.

PART 4: New Anti-Semitism Canada
Canada has one of the best records for fighting anti-Semitism in the world. American anti-Semites acknowledge that they would likely be imprisoned in Canada for the radical opinions they espouse. Yet Winnipeg is home to one of the top bloggers focusing on a “Jewish Satanic clique” that dominates the world; Friction and confrontation with Montreal’s Hassidic community are on the rise; the United Church of Canada, which holds no official position on the persecution and slaughter of Christians in Syria, Iraq, Nigeria, and Egypt, supports an economic boycott against Israel’s West Bank settlements.

Martin Himel is no stranger to risky situations. As a journalist, he has covered the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon, the US Marine Beirut battles, the Lebanese Civil War, the 1st and 2nd Palestinian Uprisings, the revolution to overthrow Communist Romanian President Ceausescu, the Gulf War, the Northern Ireland sectarian attacks, the US NATO invasion of Serbia and Kosovo, the Israeli Invasion of the West Bank, the Lebanese Israel war, the Gaza- Israel war, and an exclusive and rare look at the North Korean military. Martin traveled to dangerous regions of Iraq and Egypt, typically inaccessible to western media, to expose the inhumanities that Christians currently face for his documentary Persecuted Christians broadcast by VisionTV in March 2012.

SCREENERS FOR ALL 4 EPISODES ARE AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST.
