About the Role
As a National Staff Writer, you'll help define the voice of Daily Hive across Canada. You'll chase stories with impact, break down complex issues for a digital audience, and produce compelling journalism that people want to read and share. You will come up with original ideas and get familiar with our ongoing successful formats
The ideal candidate learns quickly and has good pattern recognition. They understand data and analytics tracking and are familiar with Search Engine Optimization. They should be organized and work with our local desks. An understanding of Google Discover is an added bonus.
The national writer will cover a wide range of topics, from major national stories and policy shifts to uniquely Canadian cultural moments, with accuracy, speed, and personality. This role demands strong editorial judgment, a digital-first mindset, and the ability to balance quick-turn news hits with deeper enterprise features.
Experience supporting video shoots through camera operation, lighting, audio setup, or production assistance is considered a strong asset.
What You’ll Do
- Pitch, research, and write timely stories on major Canadian news, trends, and issues.
- Respond quickly to developing stories, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and speed.
- Craft articles optimized for Canada's online audiences, including SEO-friendly headlines, engaging hooks, and formats.
- Create articles based on breaking news and the “after-story.”
- Partake in maintaining a team calendar of upcoming themes and events that could be covered
- Spot national conversations unfolding online and turn them into compelling, timely stories.
- Ensure accuracy, fairness, and adherence to Daily Hive's editorial standards.
- Work closely with the National team and broader editorial team to refine pitches, angles, and story execution.
- Build relationships with experts, officials, and community voices across Canada.
- Monitor web and social performance and adjust content strategies based on audience engagement and analytics
- Attend events, previews, and openings, creating content in real time or shortly after, with flexibility for evenings and weekends (always for fun)
- Build relationships with venues, PR reps, and event organizers as a trusted, professional representative of the brand.
- Collaborate with our editorial, social, and video teams, giving and receiving feedback, and helping test new ideas and series.
- Assist our video team by writing scripts for your articles (a few each week). Being comfortable with being on screen is an added advantage, but not a mandatory requirement.

What You Bring
- 4+ years in a newsroom or digital media environment.
- Strong writing skills and the ability to write clean, compelling copy under tight deadlines.
- Comfort with CMS platforms, analytics tools, and social media ecosystems
- A deep understanding of Canadian news, politics, culture, and regional dynamics.
- Adaptability is key. The media is constantly evolving.
- Commitment to responsible reporting and editorial integrity.
